4.  Major tracks/pathways within the programPhase IPhase IIGraduation project:All students at BMS undertake a supervised experimental research project as part of their program in BMS. This approved project will be of their choice and in their field of interest. Students have the opportunity to undertake research in a laboratory from a wide range of departments within the Medical Sciences Division.Students select an option from the following areas:

  • Biochemistry.
  • Microbiology.
  • Anatomy.
  • Biology
  • Infection and Immunity
  • Pathology.
  • Physiology and Pharmacology

Students produce an extended essay and carry out a research project Either (laboratory-based) , or Community Health Problems Research .

7.  New or Continuing ProgramBachelor of Basic Medical Sciences (BBMSc) Degree program is a new program, A key strength of this programme is providing a solid foundation for students who intend to complete their studies in medical/ clinical specialties. Since BMS combines academic study with the laboratory-based study & Community Research skills in addition to Clinical skills,  so students will gain the knowledge and practical skills required in completion of clinical studies. Although, the faculty is planning to fulfill necessary requirements to grant Bachelor of Basic Medical Science (BBMSc) for pre-clinical phase graduates.

B Program Context

1. Explain why the program is neededa.  Economic cultural, technical or other reasons b. Relevance to the mission of the institution. a. The programme of  Basic medical Science , was established  to fulfill the technical  gap which result from society’s needs to TSM who have a strong academic background ,and  specialized in teaching future Medical Students at the basic phase of the medical Faculties, also to provide them with basic knowledge to continue their future career ,  in addition the needs for qualified medical research lab assistant which is considered as   Corner stone for scientific research careers ,was behind establishing this facultyb. This program aims to produce compassionate graduate who possess the skills, knowledge and understanding, a critical scientific approach, and attitudes appropriate for postgraduate training and lifelong learning. This program provides dual pathway, as Students on the undergraduate programme will obtain a BBMSc and they shall be permitted to transfer to the clinical phase in Medicine faculty. 
2. Relationship to other programs.This program can be offered by the current faculty staff team and it can be achieved by current BMS resources (e.g., facilities, financial resources, learning resources, library resources and diagnostic laboratories), The impact of offering this program will be positive in terms of upgrading the the skills needed to become a biomedical scientist and introduce students to the methodologies, principles and tools required to have strong analytical skills, study the scientific and laboratory testing of biological samples and having the principle Clinical knowledge so they can proceed further to finish their Education either in Medicine or Dentistry , These contribute in developing the overall university graduates. 
3.  Do the students likely to be enrolled have any special characteristics that should be considered in the program?If yes, what are they?The applicant must have High school certificate or its equivalent and all applicants must be prepared for an interview after the required documents have been met.

2.  Major changes or strategic developments.Summer course (Graduation project) need to be conducted to fulfill necessary requirements to grant Bachelor of Basic Medical Science (BBMSc) , To apply the Previous Knowledge of ( BSSB) Block A research proposal has to be written, designed and discussed with supervisors in order to enrich research abilities. 
 

C.    Program Structure and Organization

Development of Special Student Characteristics or AttributesThe programme is delivered through a range of innovative and traditional teaching methods.Teaching is complemented by Problem-based learning and Investigation based learning by early exposure to patients in a variety of health community settings.Curriculum is delivered in way that gives new opportunities for candidates including:Group of blocks each year to facilitate active, life-long learning.2nd and 3rd year blocks building on the first year ones, adding more depth and complexity.
  • A Problem-based learning and investigation-based learning approaches to facilitate integration and translation of scientific knowledge to be prepared for next clinical stage.
  • Additional opportunities for clinical skills training in clinical skills labs.
 
  • A concentration on the application of science and research skills in the 2nd and the third year through Scientific Reports and Posters , expanding upon early science exposure in the first year.
 
  • A tutoring programme and team learning sessions to support candidates’ progression with a focus on Study Skills.
 
  • A significant emphasis on preparing students for clinical phase.
 
  • A Programmatic continuous assessment policy for PBL sessions, labs, weekly presentations and online activities to ensure that students are building up knowledge, skills, ethics, behavioural development and teams work throughout the year.

2.  Field Experience Component/ Project or ResearchSummer course is been required to Apply previous Knowledge and to   complete graduation project in order to fulfil university requirement to grand basic medical science bachelor. 
a.  Brief description of field experienceThe main goal of this course is gaining the skills needed to become a biomedical scientist and introduce students to the methodologies, principles and tools required to have strong analytical skills, study the scientific and laboratory testing of biological samples at degree level. A research proposal has to be written, designed and discussed with supervisors in order to enrich research abilities.
b.  Specify the major learning outcomes Knowledge:Strong scientific basis of health and disease and the foundations of clinical practice, including early clinical exposure. Intellectual skills:By the end of this course the student should be able to:
  1. Demonstrate the skills of solving clinical problems and decision making.
  2. Relate abnormal finding to specific etiology.
  3. Develop skills of analysis, interpretation, application and evaluation of data.
  4. Integrate and link information across the course components.
  5. Interpret the obtained data and tracings that come out of the employed tests.
  6.  Analyzing the results of lab reports
